If you can get your retainer to fit into your mouth, even if it hurts, then do so.
If not, then go back to your orthodontist and ask for a bar. This is a single bar retainer that is cemented to your back molars and curves around the inside of your teeth. It can be tightened as needed and could be the perfect solution for you. Of course you can't see a thing, only your tongue will know it's there. And, you haven't a choice about wearing it.
When your teeth are back in line then just leave it there, a permanent retainer, without any more adjustments.
I had one when I did the same thing as you. I was 20, was married, and thought pretty trumped good sense. Stupid. I had it removed when I was about 34 and my teeth have only shifted slightly since then, mostly because I had a lot of cosmetic work done on my teeth in my 30s and they (crowns and veneers)sort of keep things in the same position.

If you can still fit your retainer then start wearing it. If you can't fit your retainer then you would need to go back to the orthodontist and be fitted for a new retainer or depending on how much your teeth spaced back out you may need to go through the braces experience once again. Good luck!

Well invisalign is so much more expensive than braces. But yes you will probably need braces again. But sometimes if your teeth aren't very crooked at my orthodontist he will fix teeth with retainers.
