Does it hurt?
Does everyone get a lisp?
Did anyone lose their taste?
How much does it swell?
Do you have to take out the bar ever, and if you do, then is it hard or painful to get it back in?
Would it be better to get a plastic ball thing instead of metal?
And also im worried that because im getting braces, well im getting invisalign, but i havent got it yet, will my orthodontist not let me get the invisalign anymore if i get my tongue pierced?
Please help, thanks.

I’ve had my tongue pierced previously and have made a career in the Dental field as well.
The only part of the piercing that hurt for me (Besides the throbbing afterward) Was pulling the tongue out so far that it felt like the frenum was being detached. (The little piece of skin under your tongue.) The actual piercing did not hurt
I did not have a lisp, after the swelling in my tongue went down and I became used to the bar, my speech was quite normal, and got to the point where, when I took it out, I actually spoke differently. I have not heard of anyone losing their taste, as taste buds are located all over your tongue and are placed in different zones for different tastes. Sweet salty spicy etc. It can swell up quite a lot in the first week, to the point where eating is difficult and you may be drinking your meals. While the tongue is healing you do not take the bar out, you can move it and adjust the screw every day, but do not remove it. Once it is healed, it can be removed for short periods of time. The longer you have your piercing, the longer you can have it out. I had mine a total of 6 years, and to this day I still have most of my hole remaining, even after having it out for 3 years. You need the stainless steel bar and ball while your tongue is healing. It does not collect bacteria and will not infect the piercing site. Once this is healed though a plastic ball may be kinder to your teeth. It is up to the Ortho. whether or not they will give you Invisalign. There won’t be an interuption in the process of straightening, but there are problems with wearing down enamel in the back of your mandibular frontal teeth. (Lower front) As your tongue swelling heals, keep your bar as short as possible and it will decrease any wearing down on the enamel. All that being said, good luck, and I won’t try to talk you out of it. I’ve been in both situations, and if it is your choice and your expression, go for it! Just be careful. Talk with your Ortho first. He will probably give you the lecture, but he can also confirm whether he will continue your treatment. Though a piercing should not affect straightening. Good luck hun, and when you go, buy plenty of extra strength Tylenol!!
Does it hurt?
~It doesnt hurt much when you get it done, but will be sore for a few days-a week or so.
Does everyone get a lisp?
~I had to learn to say certain things again properly, and if I wear a stud with to big a top on it I will lisp. But otherwise, no one ever notices.
Did anyone lose their taste?
~I didnt loose any taste
How much does it swell?
~Individual to the person, I swelled alot, others I know hardly at all.
Do you have to take out the bar ever, and if you do, then is it hard or painful to get it back in?
~You will want to change the bar at some point, if you put a new one in right away, and have given the piercing plenty of time to heal, you shouldnt have a problem.
Would it be better to get a plastic ball thing instead of metal?
~They wont pierce with a plastic ball. I dont like them, they do not stay screwed on well, I have swallowed so many plastic ones. Originally you will get surgical steel I believe.
And also im worried that because im getting braces, well im getting invisalign, but i havent got it yet, will my orthodontist not let me get the invisalign anymore if i get my tongue pierced?
~That you will need to talk to your orthodontist about, I imagine he will say to wait till you are dont with your treatments.
They look stupid.
I just got mine done. Mine didn’t hurt at all, actually it hurt the least of all 25 of my piercings, and it’s my favorite piercing I have. I had a lisp for the first 3 days and it was swollen for 5..people told me I wasn’t going to be able to talk but that wasn’t the case. It didn’t effect my taste in anyway. When I changed into a shorter ring it didn’t hurt at all, and it was really easy to change. I was afraid when I went to change it for the first time It wouldn’t go through but it did very easily. Mine is gauged now. Metal balls can chip your teeth because they are heavy and hard, plastic ones might be better for that. You have to be very careful when your eating because I have bitten mine 3 times when I wasn’t paying attention. I’m not sure about the invisalign thing, ask your doctor before you get it done to be sure.
