Invisalign – Filing Teeth First?

I had a consultation with an orthodontist this past week. He suggests Invisalign for the top teeth. Will be braces on the bottom.
But he said he would file the top teeth edges – I think the side edges – file the enamel somewhat and this allows the teeth to move with the Invisalign.
I got really scared/freaked out about this cuz I don’t want my teeth enamel filed. The assistant said it is no big deal, it is like using sandpaper and only a little bit is removed.
I’m not scared it will hurt, but simply do not like the idea of having parts of my teeth filed off – I don’t want this done. Makes me very nervous.
So he said they could do braces on the top instead.
Do you know if this filing is absolutely essential for Invisalign? Does everybody have to do this? Or can it be done without filing?
