I somewhat cringe at the fact and will avoid it if I can, though. By doing orthodontics u agree to let the ortho do whatever it take to balance ur occlusion and put ur teeth straight. In either way it wont even show. Filing down teeth damages them and makes them more vulnerable to decay. The orthodontist was unethical in this particular case. If he needed more space, he should have arranged to get some teeth pulled, like orthodontists normally do. I’ve never heard of that practice. I had a dentist do this to me to fit a crown, and it resulted in legal action on my part. We went to arbitration instead of court and I won the case. A good dentist will not ruin a perfectly good tooth on purpose to fit an appliance into your mouth. I'd find another orthodontist. Good luck. No – it’s not normal – it’s unethical.
