Is This Unreasonable ? Braces?

okay, so im 15, and i got braces about a year ago. it was strictly cosmetic reasons, and they werent bad at all in the first place; i just had a slight overbite. my orthodontist said, “were looking at about 12-14 months.” and i agreed to it. well; since ive had them on, there hasnt been any change at all, as many people who are close to me have also noticed. so i go in November, and he says, ok, were looking good. you should be getting them off december after this. so im like, what? im supposed to be getting them off in january ! and he said you must be mistaken.. um, trust me, i wouldnt have agreed if i had known it would be over a year? is it unreasonable for me to ask that they be taken off now, and find an alternative such as invisalign, or a retainer?? thanks.

Your treatment time is way too unreasonable. I would have figured that you would have done something about it a long time ago. I have never heard of somebody having braces for over a year past the end of the estimation.
Know that at any point in treatment, you have the right to ask for your braces to be removed. You have this right because you are the patient and you paid them to perform treatment on you. Every person’s retainer is always different so your orthodontist can make you one even if your treatment is not considered to be completed.
Be sure and talk to your orthodontist about how your treatment is looking and how much time would be left. Also be sure to ask him about the requirements of the remaining treatment time such as if you have to wear elastics or other removable appliances etc. One reason your treatment time would have progressed this long is because you were unable to cooperate with the requirements from the orthodontist. Be sure that before you agree to continue, you fully understand what is required of you.

I really don’t think it’s unreasonable. I know it’s your mouth, but if you wanted them in the first place for strictly cosmetic reasons, you should listen to the orthodontist & have them in for however long he recommends. if you had them taken out now, it would be useless. you would be wasting your money & the invisalign or retainer wouldn’t help as much. Your teeth would go back to the way they were. Just keep them & soon your smile will be perfect :)

see if they can be replaced with invisilign braces. much better since you can take them out and no one sees them. It can be done it just costs more….but way worth it. just remember your teeth have memory so if you get them out you must where a retainer or they WILL go back to where they were. And all of the time you spent in those terrible things will be a waste

Well the thing about orthodontics is that they never know how long you’ll need them until you have them on and they see how quickly your teeth react. I know I got a 18-22 month estimate and I’m on 13 right now. So hopefully it’s the 18 for me but you never know. Just do it, you will be happy you left them on and finished it.

No you have a right to be mad. I had all my teeth to be moved and i had it done in exactly a year, your orthodontist must not be all that good. If your teeth are okay with you, you can ask about getting them off but im not sure if they will listen to you.

  • wait it out, if your teeth look good, and are properly aligned for the rest of your life its def worth the wait

    Get braces

  • Okay, orthodontists aren’t psychics. They can’t predict when it will happen. They can only give you an estimate. It happens a lot. A kid in my class has had his braces on for four years, and they said he’d only need them for two. My brother needed his for two to three, and he may get them off within a year. It just depends on how fast your mouth moves.
Obviously yours is slower. It is in no way unreasonable for you to ask, but most likely they’ll say no. Even if it is cosmetic, it could be trouble later on in life. You’ve already done it for a year, why not quit now? If you take them off, you’ll still need a retainer for the rest of your life or they’ll shift all over the place, so you’re not really missing much. Just keep them on! You’ll be happy you did! Don’t back down because the time frame is now being extended.
    Good luck!

well they said the same to me but that was cuz of complications (needed molars pulled out and even SWITCHED, god it was hell) it stretched my teethjail time from a year to 5 years. But your problem is a little different, an overbite isn’t as easy to fix as crooked teeth, its fixing a JAW. The gradual change may be hard to see, see if you look any different now to back then pre-braces.
If you look close to the same, not continuing won’t help, if your really serious about fixing an overbite, invisalign won’t help. Those are meant for teeth not jaws. Sorry but you mite need to continue the braces (maybe with another dentist, he did kind of mislead you)
If you REALLY want to fix an overbite, stick with the braces, if you don’t think its worth it, just leave it.
