Growing up, my family never had dental or health insurance. My mother took me to the dentist when I was two or so for a check up, but after that I wasn’t able to go again until the sixth grade when I had a cavity the size of a crater in one of my back teeth. It had been hurting my ear more than my mouth, so we thought it had been an ear infection. I ended up getting a root canal and practically rebuilding the tooth, as well as two other small fillings. I didn’t feel thing! I was lucky my grandmother was still alive then to foot the bill.
I went again at the end of my senior year in high school for a cleaning, filling two cavities, and seeing what could be done about my wonky back (wisdom?) teeth and TMD. (As an aside: I was punched in the jaw accidentally when I was younger, and the doctor told us to see a dentist. The sixth grade dentist told us we’d have to see a doctor about it. The next doctor told us to see a dentist. The senior year dentist said to see a doctor. Can anyone give me some advice on this matter while you’re here?)
Long story long, I haven’t seen a dentist since then. I had a really bad vitamin B12 deficiency last year that no one could figure out, and despite flossing and brushing to an almost obsessive extent and trying to maintain good oral health, my gums kept recessing. I’ve always had a tooth on my bottom row that was pushed forward when those (still) wonky back teeth grew in. That’s where it’s the worst.
I’ve been begging my mother to send me to a dentist since then. I even asked for a dentist appointment for Christmas. I’m currently attending school at Western Washington University and have no real income. I do get a refunded check from my financial aid every quarter, but it’s all I get for three or so months, and I by the time my books are bought I hardly have enough for groceries. My mother wants to help out, but she’s in worse shape than I am.
Basically, I need a lot of dental work down, possibly some orthodontics, too, and I need to find a place that will give good service for a low price. Also, any information on dental insurance plans that would be good for my situation is appreciated. I’ve looked around, but I’m really hopeless when it comes to all of this. I have no idea what I’m doing.
If you happen to live in Bellingham and have a good, kind dentist (or if you happen to be one), I’d be thrilled if you’d provide the contact information. Even if the services are not cheap, I’d still like to discuss possible payment methods with a reputable dentist. (I’d really prefer a dentist that is highly skilled. As much as I’m desperate right now, the really cheap dentists that do quick fixes or, worse, end up progressng the problems I already have are something I’d rather avoid.)
If you don’t live in the area, but you know of some good insurance companies that take pity on currently unemployed, poor college gals, that’s great, too!
To be honest, I’m actually really embarassed by the state of my teeth. I’d really like it if anyone who answers refrained from ridiculing me or telling me I brought in upon myself or something like that… Believe me when I tell you I would have gone sooner if I had the chance.
Thank you, and sorry the details of this question have gone for so long!!

Now my question is….see where it says “frequency and age limitations”? where it says something about being 25? I turned 25 on september 2nd, can I not use this insurance anymore for myself, its dental insurance through my employer so it wasnt explained very well, or can I use it maybe until right before I turn 26, meaning can I use it while I’m 25 or did it end as soon as I turned 25?

Insurance For Braces?

My child will be needing braces soon, and with todays economy 4,000 – 8,000 is a great deal of money. Our dental plan does not cover Orthodontics, because they see it as cosmetic. Does anyone know of dental Insurance that helps to cover this cost? We are in NC, and BCBSNC has nothing.

Dental Insurance Needed?

“The Dental Care Advantage discount program provides members with savings of 20% to 55%* on most dental care services, including Orthodontics & Cosmetics.” Is this true? or just a trap? Currently I’m looking for a dental insurance, I wanted to have my teeth exam/diagnose etc, then braces. What would be a reliable/suitable dental insurance/plan for an individual? Thanks.

Dental And Vision Insurance?

I am a student and looking to buy some heath insurance, or just dental and vision insurance. I have no idea which one is the best or where to start. I know with vision I want most of it to be covered, if not all including contacts.
For dental, I would like a plan that includes orthodontics included, if not all 50% would be great.
Any idea where I can get those things?

This goes along with the question I asked yesterday. I am a 28 year old who was just told that I really need braces for bite issues that will only get worse without them! As I said in my other question, my husband got very upset when I told him the cost and insisted I not get them here but in his hometown in Mexico. Anyway, I am a health care worker at a hospital and I have a very good dental insurance plan but, they revise every year and unless you change your coverage they only send you a letter saying you are covered under dental. Nothing in detail about the plan unless you decided to change it that year. I kept my coverage that I had last year because it has always been just fine. Well at the Orthodontist office they informed me that my insurance no longer covered adult orthodontics, only children. Now they went up on all the regular dentist benefits and pay 80% of almost all dental procedures, and cover yearly cleanings and, exams and, any x-rays you might need at these appointments. They also cover 50% of things like extractions, root canals and, crowns. All this makes it worth keeping my insurance but, I was wondering if anyone knows of a company that offers insurance that will cover adult orthodontics and at least some of the cost of my braces? I live in South Carolina if that makes a difference. Please any answers would be a big help!

I saw my dentist for the first time in 5 yrs(had no health insurance) and actually he wasn’t in so I saw his terrible dental hygenist she took x-rays/cleaned/examined..came out with a bunch of cavities(not sure of the # she said he might find more?) which doesn’t bother me, because genetically I’m pretty prone to them..She also mentioned I go back to my orthodontist(havent seen him in about 5 years also…) and get an expander on the bottom of my teeth if I could..(I have overcrowding since my wisdom teeth came in/not wearing my retainer..dammit.) Well here’s my issue, my dental insurance doesn’t cover orthodontics(wonderrrful..) and I’m not exactly rich(more like starving college student, whom mommy & daddy havent loaned me a penny since I was 13..) and I don’t know what to do..I’ve made the appointment with the orthodontist to get a permanent metal bracket on the back of my two front teeth put back on..(if he can, that happened almost 2 years ago)..and I don’t want to mention the expander and have him start doing things and not be able to pay my rent this month..What should I do? If I don’t get this expander, will my dentist just stop seeing me?
