What Is A Pre-authorization (orthodontics) And Why Does It Take So Long?

I went to the orthodontist for the first time on President’s Day. They were going to put in spacers, but they said they needed to call my mom’s insurance company and get a pre-authorization before we do anything.
What is it?
My mom called them yesterday, and they said it would be ready at the end of the week.
Why did it take so long to get one?

Orthodontics may be the specialty of dentistry that's concerned using the study and treatment of malocclusion (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both. Orthodontic therapy can focus on dental displacement only, or can deal using the control and modification of facial growth. In the latter case it is better defined as "dentofacial orthopedics". Therapy is also frequently prescribed for practical reasons for example providing the patient having a functionally improved bite (occlusion).
